Otis and Ellie Move to the Barn

Hello frugal friends. We are in the midst of full on lambing season here at Frugal Country Life. We are still caring for Otis and Ellie, and they are doing wonderful! Our sweet dog Sadie loves them and likes to get the milk dribbles off their chin lol.

On day two, when Otis had more strength to try and stand we noticed he was having trouble. His back legs were buckling at the ankle. So he was standing on the front of his ankle instead of on his hooves.

This was a first for us… so I taped his ankles to give them extra support. The tape really seemed to help. So we did this for 2-3 days and got him up and made him stand on them correctly several times a day.

Poor little Otis had a hard start to life, but he has pulled through so well. After taping his ankles for a few days he could stand and walk just fine without any tape.

Ellie is doing great too. They have both become great eaters. They’re always eager at feeding time and suck their bottles right down. Ellie’s a little pig when it comes to eating, and can suck her bottle down twice as fast as Otis.

Now that they are getting a little bigger we are able to stretch the feeding times out to just 3 a day. They have gotten so strong Ellie is jumping out of the plastic tote we have them in. So it’s time for them to go back to the barn.

Otis and Ellie will continue getting bottles three times a day for at least 3 more weeks. Then we’ll stretch them out to twice a day, then once a day, then finally they’ll be weaned to only hay and grain.

It’s always bittersweet when they make the move back to the barn. I’m glad they are strong enough to go to the barn, but I feel so sorry for them to be without a mommy. We put them in a stall with our Granny sheep.  She’s about 12 years old and went blind at the end of last summer.  I think they’ll keep each other company.

Otis and Ellie have settled into their home at the barn well.

They are thriving and I expect them to be just as healthy as our other lambs. Their just so stinking cute!

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you come back soon!
